  • Spas

Health spas and resorts are cropping up everywhere as products of a changing health climate. They can provide alternative treatment options for serious illnesses and chronic ailments, or serve as a revitalization from stress or winter blues.

European spas have a different function than North American spas in that they have hospital status, known as ‘Kur’ or cure clinics. Medical doctors assist guests in alleviating health problems through natural treatments. Guests receive six to eight weeks of treatments and leave the Kur with new techniques for managing their health.

Spas and resorts in North America emphasize relaxation and revitalization, without doctor- assisted programs. Their programs focus on beauty, massage, sports and leisure activities. North American spas are holidays from everyday stress or to lose weight and get fit.

The following list is by no means complete, but will give you a good idea of what is available on an international level.

    North America

    Canada

The programs offered in Canadian spas are similar to those offered in the United States, however, they tend to focus on natural environments, and outdoor activities and sports. Most French-Canadian spas offer various forms of hydrotherapy, massage and beauty treatments similar to those in Europe. Many resorts are set in mountainous regions where five-star hiking and skiing are included in the program.

    Israel

Israel is a country steeped in tradition and history. The old city has numerous shrines and antiquated sights to experience. Spas in Israel are centered in two areas, the Sea of Galiee and the Dead Sea region. The Dead Sea is 393 metres (-1,296 feet) below sea level, the lowest point on earth, and has a high concentration of minerals and salts which are healing to the skin. Bathing in the Dead Sea is a helpful treatment for skin disorders like psoriasis. The Dead Sea also contains sulfur thermo-mineral springs, and the mud on its shores is therapeutic. The mud contains salts and minerals which can be absorbed into the body through application to the skin and is good for muscular and joint diseases.

Seventeen of the underground springs in the area have been tapped by the Tiberas Hot Springs Company. The deep-seated radioactive waters are cooled to an average temperature of 100?F (38?C). The waters are hyperthermal and helpful in the treatment of arthritis, circulatory and rheumatic diseases, and degenerative joint diseases. They are beneficial for rehabilitation following surgery or injury, and respiratory ailments.

There are also facilities for physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, massage and thermal therapy. For those visiting the mud baths and hot springs there are approximately twenty hotels in Tiberias. Ranging in quality from one to four stars, most are fully air-conditioned and some have their own beaches and swimming pools.
