Spas
Health spas and resorts are cropping up everywhere as products of a changing health climate. They can provide alternative treatment options for serious illnesses and chronic ailments, or serve as a revitalization from stress or winter blues.
European spas have a different function than North American spas in that they have hospital status, known as ‘Kur’ or cure clinics. Medical doctors assist guests in alleviating health problems through natural treatments. Guests receive six to eight weeks of treatments and leave the Kur with new techniques for managing their health.
Spas and resorts in North America emphasize relaxation and revitalization, without doctor- assisted programs. Their programs focus on beauty, massage, sports and leisure activities. North American spas are holidays from everyday stress or to lose weight and get fit.
The following list is by no means complete, but will give you a good idea of what is available on an international level.
North America
Canada
The programs offered in Canadian spas are similar to those offered in the United States, however, they tend to focus on natural environments, and outdoor activities and sports. Most French-Canadian spas offer various forms of hydrotherapy, massage and beauty treatments similar to those in Europe. Many resorts are set in mountainous regions where five-star hiking and skiing are included in the program.

Bathing in the Dead Sea is a helpful treatment for skin disorders like psoriasis. The Dead Sea also contains sulfur thermo-mineral springs, and the mud on its shores is therapeutic.
